Best post-workout food destinations in Edmonton

Post-workout meals need two things: Carbs and protein. While that may seem a bit limiting at first glance, Edmonton has several awesome, healthy options for when you’re still wiping sweat away.

Meat Barbecue Ltd

1
8216 104 St Nw, Edmonton, AB T6E 4E6

Let’s kick things off with the obvious. As the name says, MEAT is the best place to get your protein. Most of the meat, from the brisket to the chicken, is smoked for a long damn time, slowly sealing in flavour and leaving them juicy. There’s also delicious sides – give the brussels sprouts a shot, seriously. Also, everything is served family-style on platters, so bring the rest of the team. If you go hard on the weekends, stop by in the morning for the fried chicken and flapjacks.

Glow Juicery

2
7911 104 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 6M6

If you’re big on the juicing (no, not ‘roids) trend, but don’t want to make your own, check out Glow, appropriately located next to Orange Theory Fitness on Calgary Trail. There’s a juice for everyone and, if you’re craving a real meal, there’s healthy salads and sandwiches. Oh, and talk to your doctor before getting in on the cleanse thing.

Al Salam Bakery Deli & Restaurant

3
3-10141 34 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 6J8

Pita equals carbs. Hummus equals protein. Sounds kind of amazing, doesn’t it? The best part about Al Salaam, aside from the delightful options, is that it’s also a grocery story, so you grab some to take home. The pitas are baked in-house, so they’re fluffy and warm and mmm … Oh, and grab the kabob plate for your protein fix.

Artisan Resto

4
10732 82 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 6P4

If you’ve been working out in the morning by Whyte Avenue (or you’re eating your first breakfast before meeting your friends for brunch – no judgment here), take a few steps down into Artisan and grab a light, delicious wrap. Going bigger? They’ll happily make you an egg-white omelet for an extra buck. If you like standard meals done well, you won’t be disappointed.

Bulk Barn

5
8069 104 St NW, Edmonton, AB T6E 4E3

It’s not a restaurant, but if you’re looking for nuts and dried fruit that won’t break you, Bulk Barn is the place to go. There’s an insane selection of nuts and you don’t have to buy a kilo – perfect, since the market price of nuts is always, well, nuts. If your workout includes hiking up a mountain, stop by here first and make your own trail mix.

IHOP Restaurant

6
3921 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton, AB T6H 4J8

Yeah, it means International House of Pancakes, so it’s heavy on the carbs, which is kind of perfect if you just ran a marathon. If that’s not the case but you’re still aching for a sweaty feast, there are more than enough omelet options to satisfy you. It’s a chain, so the food is relatively cheap and you always know what you’re going to get. Just maybe avoid the extra whipped cream, chocolate sauce and double-dipped French toast.

Beez Healthy Fast Food

7
9107 112 St NW, Edmonton, AB T6G 2C5

If you’re working out at the U of A, run to HUB Mall and stop by Beez for some quick, healthy options (a rarity on campus) after. The selection isn’t massive, but it’s all good stuff, with no shortage of rice, chickpeas, chicken and smoothies. It’s a perfect stop if you’re rushing between the gym and class.

Ichiban Restaurant Japanese Cuisine

8
8750 149 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5R 1B6

Let’s be real – sushi is great any time, especially if you’re getting it from Ichiban. If you’re having sushi after a workout, stick to less fatty ocean-dwellers like tuna or shrimp. Fortunately, Ichiban consistently has fresh, yummy ingredients and reasonable prices. Give the tuna don a go, or try the maki maki.

Not every Dad is Ron Swanson; some don’t do the meat thing, and that’s awesome. Whatever his reason – maybe he’s a huge fan of George Stroumboulopoulos and follows anything he does – thank him for being your dad by taking him out for an awesome meal. [Image credit: iStock.com/Lauri Patterson]
Dads are a tricky bunch to thank. What do you get them? A card? Socks? A firm handshake? While those are good options, how about you treat him to a darn good steak instead? [Image credit: iStock.com/Lisovskaya]
Getting gifts for guys is a gargantuan task - we’re not always upfront about what we want and often happy with pretty well anything. A blank slate can be intimidating. Good thing Edmonton has plenty of places to find perfect presents for dudes.
