Atikokan, located just a few miles north of the Canada - Minnesota border, was named for the Atikokan River, an Ojibway word meaning ''caribou bones''. The Canadian National Railway, made Atikokan a half way stop between Thunder Bay and Fort Frances and the town was named in 1899.
