Ginoogaming First Nation (formerly the Long Lake 77 First Nation) is a small Anishnawbe (Ojibway) First Nation located in Northern Ontario, located approximately 40 km east of Geraldton, Ontario, Canada, on the northern shore of Long Lake, immediately south of Long Lake 58 First Nation and the community of Longlac, Ontario. As of Septemeber, 2006, our total registered population was 773 people, of which 168 residing on-reserve. The community is within the boundaries of the territory described by the James Bay Treat of 1905 - Treaty No. 9. The Long Lake reserve was official created when the Band signed an adhesion to Treaty no. 9 on August 9, 1906, although the Band had long been resident in the area. Portions of the reserve land were surrendered and sold in subsequent years.
The Municipality of Greenstone was created on January 1, 2001 by the amalgamation of the former municipalities of the Town of Geraldton, Town of Longlac, the Township of Nakina and the Township of Beardmore, and an extensive area of unincorporated territory including numerous settlement areas such as; Caramat, Jellicoe and MacDiarmid. First Nation communities within Greenstone municipal boundaries are Long Lake 58, Lake Nipigon Ojibway, Rocky Bay and Sand Point, while Aroland and Ginoogaming First Nations are situated just outside the Municipality, adjacent to the wards of Nakina and Longlac, respectively. Greenstone is located in the District of Thunder Bay and has an area of 3,172 sq. km. (1224 sq. mi.) making it one of the largest municipalities in Canada.
