Sagamok First Nation is located on the north shore of Lake Huron. It is a beautiful community whose name means 'two points joining'. Sagamok's culture and language is Anishinabek and is made up of the Ojibwe, Odawa and Pottawatomi tribes. Also known as the Three Fires Peoples, the community members of Sagamok number well over 2000. A little over 50% of the membership lives on reserve, with the remainder living in urban locations. Sagamok is a place of rich stories, legends and history that derive from time immemorial. Once the summer camps of the original peoples who came down from Biscotasing, it is now the permanent home to many of those descendents. Sagamok is an ancestor based village that is known for its diversity, prosperity and growth.
Manitoulin Island, with an area of approximately 4,000 square kilometers, is separated on the north from the mainland by the North Channel and bounded on the south and east by Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Transportation to and from Manitoulin is via provincial Highway 6, which extends from Highway 17 in the north near Espanola to South Baymouth on the southeastern tip of the Island. From May to October, a ferry links South Baymouth to Tobermory.The Manitoulin District is rural in nature. Its population of approximately 12,000 people is widely dispersed with approximately 4,440 (37%) of this population residing in First Nations communities. In the summer months, the population increases to approximately 30,000.Manitoulin Island is renowned for its beauty and recreational opportunities, in particular, kayaking, boating, sailing, camping, fishing, cycling, hiking, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Its natural beauty and numerous small lakes make it a sought-after recreational destination
The Killarney Health Centre is a remote and modern nursing station supported by a visiting physician. It is situated in the village of Killarney along the north shore of Georgian Bay. Medical services include primary health care, emergency care, venipuncture, dispensary and Ontario Telemedicine (OTN). The hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 9:00AM to 12:00PM and from 1:00PM to 5:00PM year round. Medical Director is Dr. William J. McMullen, Manager is Darlene Kidd and the Administrator is Paul Beauvais.
