Welcome to the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is a registered charity that treats and cares for injured or orphaned wild mammals and turtles until they are healthy enough to be returned to their natural habitats. We also offer advice on co-existing peacefully with wildlife and provide humane, cost-effective ways to prevent or solve wildlife conflicts. The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary has cared for more than 1,700 animals since 2005. The Sanctuary is the only licenced rehabilitator of small mammals serving the Ottawa and Rideau Valleys. We do not receive any government funding and rely entirely on donations from the general public, businesses and foundations.

Ottawa has a population nearing 1 million, which means our already densely populated urban city is becoming more crowded by the day. While this increasing concretization can naturally reduce numbers in certain wild species, this is definitely not the case for raccoons, skunks, squirrels, bats and similar scavenging-type animals! Raccoons in particular are known to seek out urban comforts readily available with un-lidded trash cans, outdoor cat food dishes, warm and cozy worksheets and attics and backyard water features. The living is easy when you are a city raccoon where your only major predator is people! Raccoons are undeniably cute. But they are a health risk for you, your children and your pets.
