The roots of Fraserside Community Services extend back to 1972 when a small group of people formed a support group to help one another cope with, and overcome, personal challenges. Calling themselves Self Aid Never Ends (SANE), members believed that the most effective way to overcome personal difficulties was through self-help. With a government grant, the group developed its first community initiative - The Sapperton Thrift Store. Soon after, the group formed a non-profit society and opened an Achievement Center for people with developmental disabilities.
The Environmental Operators Certification Program was initially known as the British Columbia Water and Wastewater Operators Voluntary Certification Program. It began in the late 60's as an ad-hoc group of well intentioned individuals who recognized the importance of what the Operators do and the benefits for everyone to develop a mechanism to identify the tasks they do in the many different circumstances in which they work. With the assistance of the Ministry of Health we retained the lawyer who assisted the Ministry with the Drinking Water Protection Regulation and the Drinking Water Officers Guide to review our 1991 constitution and make recommendations.
