We have over 95% success rate for teaching children to learn to read using an Orton-Gillingham based simultaneous multi-sensory approach. Working memory, short-term memory, and visual/auditory memory are addressed with cognitive therapy. For students with attention issues we use both cognitive therapy, listening exercises to strengthen that skill, and executive functioning instruction for the organizational areas. Central Auditory Processing disorder is corrected using cognitive therapy as well as receptive language processing skills. Grades SK, 1, and 2 use a Touch Math system that is multi-sensory giving stronger memory of the facts. For grades 2- 8 a math program called Jump written by Toronto's John Mighton, professor and author of The Myth of Inability has worked for students struggling with math concepts and mechanics. Our work is more than a job; it is a passion.
The doors of Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School opened in September 1989 welcoming 18 staff and 198 grade 9 students. Construction and renovation were not complete until the spring of 1994, and the school now accommodates close to 900 students
Learning should be personal, and at Sylvan Learning of Scarborough Ontario, it is. Our tutors in the Scarborough area do more than teach math, reading and writing. We motivate kids to succeed.
