Dunvegan Gardens takes its name from the community and historic trading post where Bill and Hilda Friesen settled with their family in 1952. During the time of the fur trade, the Hudson?s Bay Company built a small settlement in the Peace River valley called Fort Dunvegan. Later, when the H.B.C. closed its trade in the valley the river crossing became known as the Dunvegan Crossing. It was the only point to cross the Peace River for some distance. From the time the first of the fur traders settled in Dunvegan, crops have been grown in the rich, river-bottom land to supplement food supplies. Bill and Hilda Friesen moved to Dunvegan in the fall of 1952. They and their six children quickly became accustomed to the hard work and long hours required to plant, water, fertilize, hoe, and harvest vegetable crops successfully. The three sons began to take on more of the responsibility and purchased more land along the Peace River for vegetable production. Although many crops are seeded directly into the ground in the spring, some require being started earlier in a greenhouse and then being transplanted out when the weather is warm enough. The Friesens learned from their experience growing vegetable seedlings in the greenhouse to grow bedding plants and perennials from seed and later from cuttings. Three brothers opened, then closed a greenhouse in the town of Grimshaw, then opened greenhouses in Grande Prairie, Peace River (now closed), and Fort St. John. In 2000, with families of their own to help out, the brothers separated into three distinct companies. Ron and Pauline Friesen and their three sons resumed operations at the Dunvegan/Fairview and Peace River locations. In January 2001 they purchased MacKenzie Market and Greenhouses in Fort McMurray. In May 2002 Garden Valley Greenhouses, on the western city limits of Edmonton, was purchased. In February 2005 the family purchased Grey Gardens (a Draper area market garden ) in Fort McMurray. In August 2009 the Fort McMurray Garden Centre moved its operations to the market garden site in the Draper area. We are garden centres, greenhouses, tree nurseries, market gardens, gift shops and landscapers located in Dunvegan, Fort McMurray, and Edmonton.

Our Mission* The Canadian Red Cross mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world. Vision* The Canadian Red Cross is the leading humanitarian organization through which people voluntarily demonstrate their caring for other in need. Values* Our actions and decisions will be based upon: *Humanitarian values, as expressed in our Fundamental Principles *Respect, dignity and care for one another within and outside of Red Cross, and *Integrity, accountability, effectiveness, and transparency. Red Cross Fundamental Principles In 1965, the seven Fundamental Principles were adopted by the 20th International Conference. They were developed to link together the International Committee, Federation and National Societies. Our network is vast, but our approach is simple. All Red Cross programs and activities are guided by the Fundamental Principles of Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. These principles allow us to provide help immediately to whomever needs it, wherever they are, whatever their race, political beliefs, religion, social status, or culture. Humanity The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, co-operation and lasting peace amongst all peoples. Impartiality It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress. Neutrality In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature. Independence The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement.
