When two chefs decided to open their own casual French bistro on Main Street in this little mill town, people were a bit surprised.Lee has, however, such a great diversity of people and culinary choices, we were sure it would work out. Years of training in French fine dining made us long to have a place of our own, 'chez nous,' to cook our favorite things in an atmosphere where people could really relax and enjoy.Franck Tessier and Rachel PortnoyWe first met in 1997 while Franck was working in his first post as Executive Chef at The Point, in Saranac Lake, NY. Franck had left behind his native France a few years before to work in London at the renowned two-Michelin starred restaurant, Le Gavroche. After three years working his way up through the ranks, he was sent to The Point, a Relais & Chateau property for whom Le Gavroche consulted. When I sent my resume to The Point to apply for the Pastry Chef position, unbeknownst to us, our partnership began.
HEDGE is a 55+ apartment complex that reconsiders the typically modest seniors' housing typology as an opportunity for architectural richness. The four-storey project consists of 48 apartments distributed between two buildings that together frame and preserve a mature stand of cottonwoods. The building's circulation scheme and the landscape intertwine so that experiencing the well-treed courtyard becomes an integral part of everyday life.Starting from the ground floor and continuing upwards to the roof terrace, a gently sloping promenade moves from interior to exterior and back again, forming a continuous walkway that weaves the buildings together and bridges the half storey height differential separating them. The boardwalk serves a pragmatic role by providing access to common exit stairs for both buildings, and also offers a recreational amenity for residents - a means to take a daily stroll through the trees. The building is clad in corrugated corten steel, with added depth provided by a mesh screen that spans vertically between eight inch deep flashing angles, creating space where planters can be placed.

As a painter started twenty-three years ago, I took the Red River Painting and Decorating course, and started on my merry journey figuring I knew everything about my trade. My first job was at Community Painting and Decorating. The first project was exterior, and the boss told me to start painting the garage. At the end of the day my brush had as much paint on the handle as what was in the cutting pot. The brush had even more paint on it the next day, because it was apparent how useless I was. My boss was an expert in the trade, and an expert in giving a frantic verbal whip-lashing training technique. He was the best, and oh how I loved him!The technique was quickly improving, and I was becoming very neat, and clean at the projects. Some of the homes were so beautiful, and there was an extreme caution to be 100% professional in conduct, and in proper trained principles. The last thing I wanted was to buy a rug with my paint on it, worth more than my truck.
