Ken Smith and Rob Hughes set up the partnership of Smith & Hughes together in Vancouver in January, 1984 with the goal of serving the gay and lesbian communities. We observed the needs of many gays and lesbians were not being met through conventional law firms that were ignorant of, or insensitive to, our particular issues. In over 20 years in practice we have responded to the challenges of a growing AIDS crisis and been involved in advancing our communities' human rights and equality.

In 1968, a bold young woman named Rose left her home in Europe to start a new life in Canada. After arriving in Vancouver, she quickly realized the growing young town was desperately in need of couture. So, she set out to bring the fashion she worshiped in Europe to the unseasoned streets of Vancity. Rose traveled to Paris, Rome, New York and Los Angeles on the regular. Her vision was to import the breaking trends overseas for her new Canadian friends. Soon, her friends became customers and her customers became friends. One by one, she showered the women of Vancouver with glam – from glistening gowns to fabulous handbags. As her boutiques grew, so did her influence. After Five quickly became leading source of fashion and flare in the Western marketplace. Finally, after twenty years as the fearless leader, it was time for her son Boris to take on the business.
