Our StoryIn 1995 God brought a number of people, led by David and Anita Ruis, to begin a community of faith in the core area of Winnipeg. WCV was born out of a desire to create an authentic community of followers of Jesus Christ, devoted to worshiping him with their whole lives, and extending God's justice to the poor and those who are weak.For us worshipping God is much more than singing a few songs on a Sunday morning. It is a whole lifestyle that includes offering everything that makes us human to God – our minds, bodies, emotions, spirits, cultures, as well as social and economic dimensions.Our worship of Jesus does not stop there. It demands a practical outpouring of love to those around us... especially to those on the margins of society. Our worship lacks integrity if we are not expressing our love for God through loving our neighbour. Likewise, everything we do is worthless if we are not doing it from a foundation of being loved by God, and loving him back. James, Peter and John had only one requirement for Paul and Barnabas when they were sent out on their first missionary journey... that they 'remember the poor' (Gal 2:10).

I was educated at the University of Manitoba and spent eleven years earning three degrees. I learned a lot about human behavior, but over the years my clients have taught me a whole lot more. For well over twenty years I have been a practicing Professional Counsellor or Therapist and I believe a few core things to be true. First, we all make mistakes some of which bring along many years of fall-out or implication. Second, we all need a sense of belonging, meaning and purpose. Third, happiness is a journey, not a goal or a destination. And forth, no one is more important than you are, although other people are also important (just not more important than you are). When we forgive ourselves for being imperfect and make good choices that give us the opportunity to have our basic needs met, we make it possible to experience peace and times of happiness.

Since its inception in 1919 the Festival has grown in size and scope. The first Festival had 274 entries in the 38 classes offered, with a total of 2500 participants. The 91st Annual Festival, held from March 1 to March 22, 2009, had over 3000 entries in more than 500 classes. Running for 23 days, the festival utilized 11 venues in Winnipeg and engaged 15 adjudicators from across Canada. The Winnipeg Music Festival was established by the Men's Musical Club, the first festival being held in May 1919. One of the major hurdles for these organizers was selling the idea of a competitive festival to a new market. One solution was to cooperate with existing festivals in Alberta and Saskatchewan, thereby hiring well-known and distinguished musicians, most from Great Britain, as adjudicators. This established a tradition that lasted until the mid 1960s when the festival began selecting adjudicators from North America.
