CALENDARThe coastline of south Baffin Island is rugged, beautiful and plentiful, and the Inuit of this region refer to themselves as Sikusilaarmiut. The name refers to the lack of ice along this coast or, more accurately, that the waters of the Hudson Strait stay open beyond the edge of the ice floe, even in winter.As you approach Cape Dorset from the sea, you are struck from afar by the silhouette of the highest hill on the southwest extremity of Baffin Island overlooking Hudson Strait. There, looming on the horizon like a sleeping beast of prey and bearing the Inuktitut name of Kinngait (the mountain), sits Dorset Island.The Hudsons Bay Company established a trading post here in 1913, followed by the missions, the school and in 1959, the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative. The Co-op is the oldest arts organization in the Canadian Arctic, and the Kinngait Studios are the oldest professional printmaking studios in Canada. Cape Dorset is home to some of Canadas most acclaimed Inuit artists, and the Co-op and its Toronto marketing office, Dorset Fine Arts, have been representing them for the past fifty years

The venue marks the city's only LIVE rock n' roll and DJ venue, equipped with a resident tattoo shop. The 9,000 Sq Ft. dual level space is sexy, innovative and comfortable, the upper level featuring two bars and of course a stage for live music, with banquettes and cool dining and cocktail tables trimming the walls. The lower level features an intimate atmosphere with a bar, a fireplace and dining tables. The design uses contrasting hard and soft materials and colours, with intricate narrative graphics in rich cream, silver and pewter metallics. The homage to rock n' roll are subtle, linking the theme and space together into minimalist fashion.

YYZ continues to nurture and support contemporary art practices in Toronto and to make a recognized contribution to the Canadian cultural scene.YYZ supports three areas of programming - visual art, artists' film and video and writing and publishing on Canadian art and culture. YYZ is committed to paying artists' fees and providing equipment and support, particularly for our time-based arts programming. In 1992 YYZ produced YYZTV, a program of contemporary film and video for Rogers Cable. YYZ Books was founded in 1988; it is the only publishing house dedicated to Canadian artists and writers.
