Come and discover Vancouver's best-kept secret. An island retreat in the city, just minutes from downtown and just steps from the famous Public Market, live theatres, artists' studios, unique shops, and exceptional restaurants. A luxurious boutique hotel built on the water's edge with magnificent view of the ocean, city, and mountains.
Port Moody – City of the Arts! – is located at the head of Burrard Inlet and at the foot of Eagle Mountain. A vibrant city of 34,000, Port Moody is located an easy 40 minute drive from both downtown Vancouver and the US border, and just steps from seaside parks, mountain trails and lakes.HistoryThe early inhabitants of this area were the Squamish and Musqueam bands of the Coast Salish people, their ancestors having occupied the Lower Mainland for the past 8,000 years. They used the Port Moody area to fish, hunt and gather shellfish. Evidence of their summer campsites, in the form of shell middens and Indian artifacts can be found at the eastern end of Burrard Inlet.Non-indigenous people began to occupy the area around 1800. Fur traders regularly traveled through this region. With the appearance of gold prospectors during the Cariboo Gold Rush of 1858 and the need to develop a back-door defence for New Westminster, in 1859 the Royal Engineers--under the command of Col. Richard Moody--were sent to clear a trail.

We are Canada's principal maritime museum on the Pacific, located in the heart of Canada's greatest ports at the gateway to the Pacific Rim. For 45 years, we have been Pacific Canada's premier link to maritime history, art, culture, industry and technology. We do our job best when visitors of all ages have fun while learning. We believe in families. We believe that anyone and everyone can continue to learn throughout their life. And we believe in making stories come alive through using artifacts - the real thing not, make-believe set. We are a favourite with children and with their parents and grandparents. We are a popular destination for both local and residents and tourists. Each year, more than 100,000 people visit the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Most of our visitors are families from the Lower mainland. During the months of May to October, the Maritime Museum is a popular destination for tourists curious about the maritime history of Canada. In addition, thousands of students participate in guided education programs and we are a popular destination for community groups.
The garden design features displays of plants in picturesque landscape settings. Specific garden areas are planted to illustrate botanical relationships, such as the Rhododendron Walk, or geographical origins, as in Sino-Himalayan Garden. These areas are set amidst rolling lawns, tranquil lakes and dramatic rockwork with vistas of the mountains and Vancouver cityscape. VanDusen Botanical Garden provides an inspiring and enjoyable environment for visitors of all ages and interests. With its excellent collections and the beauty of their display, the Garden promotes knowledge and understanding of the world of plants and their fundamental importance to life.
Thank goodness some people with foresight and vision saw the opportunity that presented itself when the Shaughnessy Golf course closed in the 60s. Saving a good chunk of the land from developers, the Vancouver Foundation, the Province and the City of Vancouver worked to establish this gem on part of the land once occupied by the golf course. The results are now here for all to see with charming little paths winding among the impressive variety of plants, shrubs, bushes and trees that are all carefully labeled throughout the grounds. There's even a fun and challenging hedge maze! The restaurant is a lovely place to go for a meal and the gardens seem an ideal spot to hold a wedding with great places for photo ops throughout the gardens. And Van Dusen continues to improve with a new visitor centre being built for 2011. The other thing that must be mentioned as a must see is the light show they put on every Christmas. Huge swaths of the gardens are lit up with thousands if not millions of lights. This is all complemented by a musically choreographed light show that happens regularly on the main pond. WIth snack booths offering hot chocolate and other goodies it is a great way to indulge in Christmas Spirit. Visit Van Dusen Gardens and enjoy a little tranquility in the middle of the city!Read more
