Alexwe're working on a fun science project at Wintergreen Studios this summer. In the interest of tallying and identifying all the species of plants on our land, we're constructing a herbarium. A herbarium is essentially a library of plants, a vast collection that catalogs the species composition in our surrounding area. When a plant is picked, it needs to be dried out and then mounted on a rigid piece of cardboard for display.Each entry is a single plant along with particular attributes:the plant itself, identified with its family, genus, and speciesthe precise (GPS) location where the plant was founda short description of the habitat where the plant was foundthe name of the person who collected the plant and the name of the identifierthe plant's cataloging numberthe date on which the plant was pickedthe name of the institution where the plant is storedWhen picking a plant, it is important to have all of its parts.

The School was affiliated with Queen's University, but was formed independently in order to qualify for provincial government grants. These grants could not be obtained by the University because the government would not subsidize Church-affiliated colleges. The idea of a school of practical science had been maturing in the minds of Chancellor Sandford Fleming and Principal Grant for some time and many Kingstonians supported the idea. In 1887, John Carruthers provided money for a Science Hall, which was opened in 1891. When the School of Mining was founded two years later, Science Hall became its home. Dr. W.L. Goodwin of Queen's Chemistry Department was appointed Director of the School. A great deal of the credit for the development of the School of Mining must be given to Dr. Goodwin, who constantly pressed for more and better equipment, and for larger and better accommodation. A Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science was created within Queen's College in 1894 with Professor Nathan F.

In 1884, delegates to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters' Fourth General Convention adopted this emblem to serve as a symbol of the union's ideals. After a century and a quarter, some of the items are no longer common on jobsites, but the values they represent remain a vital part of the Brotherhood.
