I've been eating here off and on for about twenty years and the food is consistently excellent.
My one complaint (perhaps more of an observance, really) relates to how noisy it can get with a full house. Once upon a time, they used to have a carpeted dining room but changed it to tile about ten years ago. Needless to say, sounds are no longer muffled.

The roti here is spectacular. They have goat, beef, chicken, veggie, etc.. Just enough heat in the curry, great potatoes, huge portions. So much flavor. It is the best roti I've had, period. The jerk chicken dinner is also very good.
That being said, I have heard some horror stories about the cleanliness of this place. I love that the owner has decorated the place to make it seem like a cultural oasis in an extremely white city, but it just NEEDS TO BE CLEANER. I don't want it yuppiefied. So, stick to food that has high turnover, like the roti.
The uniqueness and quality of the take out at a place like this is something that I would actually miss if I moved away from peterborough. That is saying something. The food is the only reason it is worth risking eating at a place that looks like it could not pass a health inspection.

This is truly the best of all culinary & entertainment worlds! Obviously "the best" is subjective, and if you like big chain joints, stuffy service and soft music, this isn't the place for you. But if you like an intimate, dark and cozy atmosphere, fantastic casual service, the crackle of vinyl while MJ, James Brown or the Boss rings out across the bar all while eating some of the best food you've ever tasted...The Whalesbone is calling your name. Perhaps the best selection of oysters I've ever seen (even rare Pacific oysters from BC and NZ), professional bartenders/oyster shuckers keeping you "hydrated", fed and entertained, and a well-trained & highly talented (and VERY fun) staff make The Whalesbone a great place for lunch, dinner or just drinks with your friends!
