Welcome to the Haida Child & Family Services Society We are embarking on a journey that will lead us to self governing our own Child Welfare System. We are calling this journey A New Direction 'K'yuu Gawtlaas'. We have given the 'New Direction' a nickname within our offices. We have coined it the 'New Old Direction' because we are instilling Haida values into our practice. Haida values and cultural appropriateness is something that has lacked in the past. We will be building a new traditional model of child welfare that exemplifies the traditional Haida way of life. This New Direction will enrich the lives of Children and Families in our Haida Gwaii communities.
Marine Matters. Most of this planet is marine. We depend enormously on the health and wealth of the ocean for our wellbeing as individuals and communities. Yet over a lifespan, our time on the water is but a drop in the bucket.Marine Matters is about awareness, respect, conservation and wise use of what drifts, swims, crawls, floats, walks and breathes in the ocean. It's about thinking and talking and taking care of marine matters around us.We who live on Haida Gwaii are surrounded by ocean. The ocean, the lifeblood of Islanders stretching thousands of years before us, is intertwined in the deep roots of Haida people. So too is the ocean enmeshed in the unfolding heritage of recent Islanders, anchoured here only just over a century ago. What we share as Islanders is a passion for this place a deep caring for the marine animals and the habitats that support them. From these roots, sprout shoots of respect and vigilance for the marine waters around Haida Gwaii shoots that may secure prosperity of the sea thousands of years after us
Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) is 300 km long, in a rough triangular shape from 100 km wide across the top, tapering to a point at Cape St. James at the south end. Tucked under the coastline of islands that form the Alaska panhandle, they are 75 km from the American border, approximately 120 km west of the outer islands of the northern BC coastline, and 770 km by air from Vancouver, BC.Haida Gwaii is a collection of about 150 islands resting on the western edge of the continental shelf. There are two main islands, Graham Island to the north (home to Naden Lodge) and Moresby Island to the south. About 5,000 people share these islands, most residing on Graham Island in the communities of Queen Charlotte, Tlell, Port Clements, Masset (home to Naden Lodge) and the two native Haida communities of Skidegate and Old Masset. Sandspit is located on the northeastern tip of Moresby Island. A 20 minute ferry ride and 130 kilometers of pavement connect the two islands and their communities. These islands have been home to the native Haida people for thousands of years where they thrived on the natural abundance offered both by the land and sea. The Haida people are renowned for their distinctive art and totem poles, many of which can be found near our lodge in Masset. We would be pleased to introduce you to local artists during your stay if you so desire. In fact, the Naden Lodge logo is a native Haida representation of the Chinook Salmon.
