Richmond Centre has been at the heart of the Richmond community for many years.Prior to the land being developed as a shopping centre, the Brighouse Park Racetrack was located here. Horses raced until the late 1940's when the popularity shifted to another race track.By 1965, the land was developed by Richmond Square Ltd. and Richmond Square was opened. In 1973, the Hudson Bay Development Corporation Limited (HBDCL) opened Richmond Centre right across the way from Richmond Square. A parking lot and Saba Road separated the two malls.

Al Scott Lock and Safe was started in Vancouver from the ground up in 1973. The first service truck was a 1963 GMC pickup truck with a homemade camper for a shop on the back of the truck. The business was started by Allan and his wife Eileen Scott. Al saw the need for a locksmith company to provide professional locksmith service that would master key the large commercial buildings and keep an accurate file of the codes for the convenience of the building management people and also provide better building security. Over the next 13 years the Scotts with the help of many people were able to build a company with 6 mobile units and 2 stores.
