LIUNA Local 183 is the largest Construction Local Union in North America.Founded in 1952 by our first member, Brother Gerry Gallagher, LIUNA Local 183's mandate was to insure the safety of workers toiling for the Provincial Hydro Commission. With little more than 400 members in their first year, LIUNA Local 183 has grown to now represent more than 40,000 construction workers and their families in the Greater Toronto Area. His craft was learned, as a youth, in his native Iran and honed, in subsequent years, grinding lenses in Germany and then camera lenses in Switzerland.Attracted by the excitement of retail opportunities, Mr. Hakim began to pass the great deals he gave to wholesalers on to the public.Today Hakim Optical serves the public with 157 outlets (including 137 one hour factory outlets) in Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Manitoba.

It is with great pride and pleasure that we announce the induction of Mr. K. Hakim to knight of The Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta. Thereafter having the title Sir Karim Hakimi.The celebration of Sir Karim Hakimi's knighthood took place in the evening of June 24th, 2005 at Queen's Park Toronto, Ontario's Parliament Hall. This great honour has been bestowed upon Sir Karim Hakimi for his many generous contributions such as donating hundreds of thousands of pairs of eyeglasses to people in less fortunate countries.
