Nor’west Sod Ltd. started in 1986 with a 22 horsepower tractor and a borrowed 3-wheel bike. At the time, very little was known about growing sod on peat bog in Newfoundland. Due to the complexity of peat bogs, it required a lot of trial-and-error process to bring them to sufficient production levels.
Initially, Nor’west Sod Ltd. had a PTO (Permit to Occupy) on 5 acres in Winterland on the Burin Peninsula. Eventually, a lot of the bugs got ironed out (not all – some are still being worked on), and the company was incorporated in 1993.
Nor’west Sod Ltd. is today a sole proprietorship with one stockholder. We have approximately 150 acres of bluegrass sod in production at two locations – Winterland and Morley’s Siding. Our dedicated team includes 8 full-time seasonal employees and 2 to 4 part-time staff members. We can ship sod to anywhere in Newfoundland in a timely manner. Contact us for more information.

Founded by Harold Allin Rogers and ten other men on February 20,1920 in the Nanking Cafe in Hamilton, Ontario. This group formed our Association's first club. The Kinsmen Club of Hamilton. Next came a club in Montreal, then Winnipeg, then Vancouver. As the association spread across the country, it came into contact with other like-minded organizations with which it found enough common ground to consider mergers.
