The centre emphasizes the importance of early detection and is dedicated to prevention and research of prostate cancer. Currently, 1 in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the leading type of cancer in men. In 2009, approximately 25,500 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer (1,600 more than last year), and about 4,400 will die from it (100 more than last year). It is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in men (27 per cent of all cancer cases), and the third leading cause of cancer death (11 per cent of all cancer deaths). It is estimated that 694 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer on Vancouver Island, with 120 men dying from the disease.
