The name 'Hesperus' comes from the Greek word for Venus – the 'evening star.' Setting after the sun, it signifies the end of the day, but through its own movement it changes from the evening to the morning star – 'Aurora.' Thus, it embodies the metamorphoses taking place in the life cycle itself. Hesperus Village in Vaughan, Ontario is a seniors' affordable housing residence offering an independent lifestyle and a rich quality of life. Half of the apartments are rent-geared-to-income units. Hesperus is surrounded by a protected green space on a wooded ravine along the East Don River. A limited number of apartments in Hesperus East offer walk out patios on the ground level.
Jaffari Community Centre in Thornhill, ON. The vandalism is being investigated by York Regional Police. It was only a week ago that the ISIJ hosted an Interfaith event which welcomed people from all faiths from across York Region. Having this occur following what was truly one of the most heartening and meaningful experiences is completely unacceptable. While appalling, these actions do not represent the attitudes of Canada's multicultural society.
The community of members that make up the ISIJ of Toronto began congregating for major religious occasions in the late 1960's. Today we have grown into a Shia Muslim community whose organization is a source of inspiration to other Muslim communities continent-wide. There are currently almost 2000 voting Members of the ISIJ of Toronto, which when including family members translates to approximately 5000 individuals. The Membership is comprised primarily, but not exclusively, of Shia Muslims of Indian origin from East Africa with a deep and rich history of worship, congregation and community service. Indeed, serving and managing the affairs of a Community of this size requires dedication, organization and a collective desire to 'be your neighbour's keeper.' As a result of this spirit, we have established 5 separate places of worship in Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Brampton, Hamilton and London, Ontario.
