The beginning of the United Church congregation in Victoria Square dates back to 1832, when the Primitive Methodists first established what was then termed a ''class'' here under the leadership of ''Daddy'' William Haton. This group built a church on the east side of Woodbine, north of Elgin Mills. Around the same time, John Wesley, leader of the Wesleyan Methodists, was initiating a new influence on our way of life. John Wesley was born in England in the 17th century. He and his brother, Charles, preached a strictly disciplined way of life and because of this, they and their followers were known as Methodists. Toronto's early settlers included many Methodists: Egerton Ryerson, Bishop Strachan, and Timothy Eaton for example.

Our organizations have reason to celebrate as both the Minden Hills Open at the Gull and the National Whitewater Championships at MKC were incredibly successful with a high quality experience for athletes, officials, and spectators. The team of volunteers that contributed to the organization of these events displayed an outstanding commitment and dedication to ensure the races were conducted at the highest level possible. Many of the athletes competed in both events and were grateful for the efforts put forward on their behalf. Why were these two events so important to WO and ORR? The Minden Hills Open provided us the opportunity to once again use our new timing system at the Gull which is site of the 2015 Pan Am Games Canoe Slalom competition. Our team of volunteers worked with Pan Am Technical Advisor Eric Lokken to streamline the procedures necessary to run a high caliber race.
