The first inhabitants of the Cariboo-Chilcotin were the Secwepemc, or Shuswap people. They lived in the region for at least 8,000 years prior to contact by European settlers. The Secwepemc people had a rich and vibrant culture. They held many spiritual and secular ceremonies to honour and celebrate special events, such as the first roots of the season, salmon fishing, spirit dances, family gatherings and name-giving ceremonies.The Secwepemc culture is rich with myths and legends, and key among these are the exploits of seklep, or coyote. As the legend goes, seklep was sent to put the world in order. He used his powers to create mountain ranges and waterways, and he introduced salmon to the region to feed the Secwepemc people. While foolish in nature, seklep was also intelligent and cunning, and he had great magical powers that he used to make the world safe.

Welcome to SmithersThe Smithers Golf and Country Club was started in the early 1930s and gradually expanded to 18 holes in the early 1980s. Over the years, the hard work of its active membership and volunteers has resulted in a course that has achieved its current status as one of the best courses in Northwest British Columbia.The course boasts one of the largest junior golfer memberships in the province. Throughout its history the club has encouraged family participation by keeping membership costs to a minimum. Low rates for junior and senior golfers has kept this recreation within reach of most members of the community.The club sponsors a number of tournaments throughout the season, starting with the Spring Classic on the May long weekend with both mens and ladies events. July sees the club hosting a Seniors, a Juniors and Mr. and Mrs. tournament. The ladies host the Ladies Northern Open in August and the men host the Mens Northern Open on the Labour Day weekend (3 days).
