Pair of Medics First Aid has been teaching lifesaving skills for several years, in the northern region of Vancouver Island, BC and now in the Alberni Valley. Pair of Medics First Aid Training was originally started because both Chris and Carla working as Primary Care Paramedics with the BC Ambulance Service would arrive on scenes and realize that most of the patients, that were critically ill or injured, could have had some lifesaving first aid provided to them prior to their arrival. Pair of Medics First Aid brings 24+ years of combined experience to the classroom. Chris and Carla are both certified training instructors with the Canadian Red Cross and are members in good standing with the local Chamber of Commerce. We provide the highest quality first aid equipment and supplies while offering our students a professional first aid program in a relaxed and fun environment. The property on the top of Cates Hill was obtained by Wolfgang Duntz, a developer on Bowen Island. With foresight and integrity, he knew that the land was not for private hands, and in the zoning process reserved it for a retreat centre. With a sense of faith, he prepared to gift the land and waited to see how that might come about. Howard and Shirley Bentall, a couple who spent their lives in Christian service, were also waiting and listening for how they might use the financial resources that had come into their hands. The 3 of them met in January of 2001. Around that time, Shirley gave Wolfgang a hand drawn floor plan of a retreat center along with her vision. The builder, Dennis Dallas - worked with the sketch and 18 months later, on June 3, 2002 the doors of Rivendell Retreat were opened. Wolfgang often says that the timing was perfect for the creation of Rivendell in light of the development on Bowen. In addition the cooperative spirit of the workmen who built the lodge can be sensed in the beautiful workmanship of the building. A small group of people came together during the building phase to envision the ongoing life of the retreat. The group was intentionally selected to include a variety of denominational backgrounds and experience. As principles were identified and models of functioning discussed - a vision unfolded of a way of being that would embody hospitality and accessibility. The creation of Rivendell Retreat Centre was truly an experience of being Spirit led. As we look back on the unfolding, we witness the timing, the envisioning process and the building with a sense of awe.

The Port Alberni Friendship Center, established in the mid-1960s, is one of the more than 119 friendship centres across Canada and 25 in BC, with a mandate of providing services for urban Aboriginals. The services presently provided at our center are counselling, recreation programs, legal help, some public health services, social events, crafts and cultural events, with a general drop-in atmosphere.The Friendship Center is a non-profit society made up of individual members, governed by a board, which is elected from the membership at large, and administered by an executive director, and a staff of up to 36 which includes temporary project staff of 4-15 depending on the season. The Friendship Center's core budget is funded by Heritage Canada and administered by the National Association of Friendship Centres {NAFC} and the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC). Other programs are funded by individual agencies with a focus on that particular subject area.
