We go to the Barley Works on Friday or Saturday nights after nine pm to play trivia. We have samples seveal of their menu offerings and really enjoy the perogies and spinach salad. April is a great bartender and we are never left waiting or wondering if we are being taken care of.
Worth the drive to Waterloo if you like a place to sit and play a bit of interactive trivia. So long as you don't mind that it is mostly a student hangout (and we "old fogies" don't mind at all).

The food, atmosphere and service were excellent. Pasta dishes were tasty even though they were vegetarian, my grilled salmon was cooked to perfection and the sirloin steak was yummy. The place was very clean, will be back soon....

Part way through the week long ENDURrun 160KM stage race this past summer I started battling back spasms along with the distance. The pain was impairing my breathing and freedom of motion. After each stage, and in the one off day, Dr. Colin worked on my back to ensure I was ready for the next race day. i not only completed my fastest ENDURrun but ended it with a personal best marathon time to finish the week. I continued with a few more weeks of treatment, with both Colin and Dr. Erika the naturopath, which put an end to the spasms and let me enjoy the rest of my ultra racing season pain free. Mel's Diner was the brainchild of my brother Scott and his wife Elizabeth. They opened the University Ave location in 1995. If you came in back then chances are you would have been served by my wife Angela or myself. We worked for Scott and Elizabeth until we bought them out in April of 1999. Mel's was our first baby....followed by three more. The first year we owned Mel's was a crazy one. we got married, bought the business AND had our first child, who is now thirteen and heading to highschool next year. We had two more children over the next four years and we raised them at Mel's! Many of you know them by name as they were always with us.
