At nine, he lost his mother. His father was then appointed to Tokyo. Schoolboy and brilliant student, he is very interested in Western culture. Bullied by his classmates because of his weak constitution, he is interested in Jiu-Jitsu he began studying in 1877 under the tutelage of three successive masters Hachinosuke Fukuda and Iso Masamoto Tsunetoshi Iikubo.
