Nestled amongst the trees, rocks, and houses lies the growing school of Sissons. École John Howard Sissons is centrally located in this peaceful, small and community-minded city. École J.H. Sissons school is privileged to accommodate over 320 students in a French Immersion setting from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. In addition, ÉJHS is a member of a larger family of schools within Yellowknife Education District No. 1, or simply YK1, which is the title of the school district. Our graduating students go to École William McDonald for Grade 6 to continue their French Immersion studies, a small middle school which is in walking distance of our school. École J.H. The UNW provides direct service to its members, representing them in job appeals, grievances and everyday workplace problems. UNW also prepares bargaining demands for contract negotiations. UNW Service Officers help ensure that the terms and conditions are enforced for each of the 25 Collective Agreements that apply to our UNW members.

Mildred Hall School has been a downtown landmark for many years. Our tipi, which houses our Aboriginal Language and Culture Program, characterizes the unique nature of our school. We recently completed an extensive renovation that has allowed us to improve upon our proud tradition of being an integral part of the downtown scene. Mildred Hall was Yellowknife's first school teacher and the original log school house which bears her name, still sits on our property. Our school was nominated and chosen as one of the Top 40 Schools in Canada as selected by Today's Parent magazine. Voted in from a field of over 600 schools, we earned this honorable recognition for the unique and diverse programming we provide. This includes the Aboriginal Language and Culture Program and our approach to literacy development. We are very proud of our diverse and unique student population.
