We are a provincially registered not-for-profit organization and a federally registered charity. All services provided by the Society meet the rigourous international standards set by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.Since our inception in 1957, we have continually expanded our facilities and services. Although the Clements Centre Society has grown, we have never compromised our initial vision. At Clements, we envision a community in which all individuals are included, accepted, and valued.
Time for Some Real Solutions - Reclaiming the Commons 2013It's a sad case. In Vancouver a 50-foot lot on the west side with a single family home was only $1.2 million a year ago. Today it is $1.65 million. For the somewhat less pricey average two story Vancouver home, it would take 94% of the average families household income.
The 'Victoria Native Indian Housing Society' was incorporated on February 6, 1984 as a non-profit society. The name was changed to the M'akola Housing Society on April 5, 1988.The Society was originally established to provide safe, affordable housing for families of Aboriginal ancestry who were in core need of housing in urban centres on Vancouver Island. Since that time the Society and its mandate have expanded into what is now the M'akola Group of Societies.
We are members of the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association. The International Association represents 150,000 members throughout Canada and the United States. The first Vancouver Island sheet metal union was originally formed in Victoria on July 3, 1909, back then we were known as the Amalgamated Sheet Metal Workers International Alliance, Local 134. In March 1940, we became the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local 276. Today Local 276 carries on the tradition of representing the skilled men and women working in the sheet metal and roofing trades on Vancouver Island.
There are a few precautions that must be followed in the Batting Cage. Supervision is a must. There is still Rally Cap equipment and more that you MUST NOT TOUCH. Coaches enter from the door closest to the street. The players enter the batting cage at the door opposite the machine at the far end of the cage. Players not batting should remain outside the batting cage, behind the gate at the same end, or may stand beside the coach at the pitching machine. They are NOT to be in the second side of the cage for safety reasons.
The brainchild of Dorothy Evans, The Canada Day Celebration, was a big success, bringing a tear to many an eye. Flags were flying and some members wore their native costumes. Based on a survey conducted by Dorothy, we were amazed at how many countries around the world we are connected to – sixty two in all. These facts were shown in a slideshow, while Gwen MacPherson gave a running commentary. The presentation was enriched by Dorothy, with fiddle in hand, entertaining us with Canadian folk music and songs accompanied by Pat Robertson, supported by members of the Blue Heron Singers. The grand finale was a rousing rendition of 'O Canada'.Another special event in June was our annual Pot Luck luncheon at Connie McKenzie's lovely garden. Members enjoyed a tasty lunch under gazebos scattered around the garden – a special occasion, which has been hosted by Connie for the past eight years. One of the traditions of the Association at this time of year are the Garden Tours of the Johannessens' and Watkins'.
