Cowichan Women Against Violence Society works from a feminist perspective to provide a supportive environment for victims and children who have been affected by abuse. We support diversity, change, choice and growth through counselling, advocacy, emergency shelter, community development and education The purposes of the Society are: 1. To provide emotional support and information for victims who have been sexually assaulted or physically/emotionally battered. 2. To provide temporary emergency shelter for women, who have been physically/emotionally battered or sexually assaulted, and their children. 3. To ac as a liaison between the sexually assaulted and/or battered victim, community services and the legal and medical system. 4. To be an educational force for progressive changes in attitudes, laws, institutional procedures dealing with violence against victims and children. 5. To work for the prevention of sexual assault, battering, and child sexual abuse/incest.

I have been offering counselling services to children and youth in B.C. for 20 years. I worked for a time on the mainland, but returned home to the Island 8 years ago with my husband to raise our son. I am honoured that you are interested in my services and I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I have been described as slightly non-conventional in the counselling world, which suits me perfectly, and also tends to suit children and youth who are trying to stand up to the force of the problems in their life. I am very comfortable working with this population, and I feel fortunate that I can connect with kids and teens the way I do, conventionally or in a way that makes sense to them. I believe that people hold many stories about themselves, but when they seek me out, it is usually because they are focused on stories about their problems.
