People come for psychotherapy for a number of reasons, but often there is a life circumstance that challenges the coping ability they already have . This can be an opportunity to strengthen and grow in ways that are required in order to function adequately. Therapy can provide the support, reflection, feedback and learning necessary to make empowering choices. I have been in a private practice counselling role for over 25 years. Most people would like to change something about their lives. The ability to change is within each of us, however, we do not always make the changes we want, or even know where, or how to begin. Both pros and cons to making the desired change likely exist, and these competing ideas can often serve to keep us "stuck. To make matters worse, making a change typically means giving something up, and when we give something up, we replace it with something new, usually the unknown. Confronting the unknown often produces feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Many people resist change, despite the desire to change, because they feel very uncomfortable when they cannot predict their own feelings, responses, or what might happen in the future because of this change. Fear of the unknown can then become another obstacle to change. The process is difficult, and change is never easy, or we would be doing it already!
Our feelings from today stay with us until tomorrow, and sometimes we need a counselor to help us cope with those unpleasing thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Mavis Naylor Counselling in South Lethbridge and Calgary is here to guide you to a brighter tomorrow.

Therapist to therapist and clients that have puzzled others.
I have learned a great deal in my 20 years as a Psychologist but one thing remains constant – I am honored to journey with people as they transform towards wellness, to offer compassionate presence and therapeutic knowing during times of struggle. I believe that people are both amazing and messy at the same time. My role is to meet people where they are so that we can find a way to live deeply in the “amazing” while easing the “messy.”
I work with teens, adults, and couples and I have special interests in relationships, attachment, anxiety, trauma, sexuality, grief, and supporting families with ill or special needs children. I draw on several different approaches to therapy depending on what clients need. My work is particularly influenced by advanced training in Hakomi, a therapy approach that integrates cognitive, emotional, and physiological realms as sources of knowing.
