In business since 1988, Distributel Communications in 100% Canadian-owned, and one of the pioneers of the competitive long-distance industry in Canada. When the company first started providing services in the Toronto area, the founder and president,, Mel Cohen, was forced into a ground-breaking battle with Bell Canada. At the time, Bell tried to argue that Distributel's service was illegal. Fortunately, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission ruled in Distributel's favor, a decision which helped open the door for competition in the long distance market in Canada. In 1991, Mr. Cohen and three entrepreneurs from Montreal decided to open business in the Quebec market. The partnership was a success, as was the sister company, Communication TELOSysteme inc., which operates as Distributel in Quebec. Together, the two companies have grown into an operation is relied upon by more then 200,000 subscribers across Ontario and Quebec for their long distance, Internet and paging solutions.
