The GMF-U des Aurores Boréales is first and foremost a medical clinic where general practitioners, specialized nurse practitioners (SNPs), clinical nurses, nursing assistants and social workers practice, but also a learning environment for externs and residents in family medicine as well as SNP interns.
The following services are available at Waswanipi: Walk-in Clinic, Awash (baby & child), Uschiniichisuu (youth), Chishaayiyuu (elders), Dental clinic, Blood tests, Pharmacy, Nutritionist, Social services, and Multi-services day centre (MSDC).
The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB) is responsible for the administration of health and social services for all persons residing either permanently or temporarily in Region 18, the administrative region of the Ministry of Health and Social Services of Quebec corresponding to the Cree territory of James Bay. Our mandate is defined in Chapter S-5 An Act respecting health services and social services for Cree Native Persons.
Eastmain is located on the east coast of James Bay, on the south shore of the Eastmain River. The territory of Eastmain, designated as Category 1 land, is comprised of 489.53 square kilometres. The town itself has about 8 kilometres of, now paved, roads and is accessible year round by a gravel access road and via Air Creebec. Eastmain 2004Eastmain is one of the nine communities that make up the Cree Nation; one of four Cree communities that are located on the eastern shore of James Bay. The Cree Nation is the largest group in the Algonkian language family in Canada. The Cree Nation is almost equally divided between the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Approximately 13,000 Crees live in Northern Ontario and nearly 16,000 Crees live in Northern Quebec. All occupy the vast area around James Bay.
