The Art Smith Aviation Academy (ASAA) is nestled within the heart of 4 Wing Cold Lake, Canada’s largest fighter base. The roar of overhead jets provides the perfect inspirational tone for the complete aviation learning experience. The Academy is an 'alternative program school' within Northern Lights School Division. We provide a K to 8 program in both English and French Immersion to all families in the Cold Lake area. The school also takes pride in being able to focus on the specialized needs of military dependants while supporting students of the area surrounding 4 Wing Cold Lake.
Members of the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence lend a collective hand to the aviation program of the ASAA. As positive role models for the students who attend the academy, the aviators and support members of the defence team provide the benefit of their experience, training and knowledge to ASAA’s students.
The history of the Cold Lake area can be traced back to 1821 when the Hudson's Bay Company established the Beaver Crossing trading post on the shores of the Beaver River. This trading post was part of a network used to transport furs from Lac La Biche to the east, serving an important role in the country's early fur trade industry. However, it was not until 1905 that the first British, Swedish, Norwegian, Swiss and French-speaking homesteaders arrived and settled the area.
