Harambee Housing Co-operativeLocated just off Pembina Hwy. and Bishop Grandin Blvd. in South Winnipeg, close to schools and shopping, Harambee is a Co-operative Housing Community of 54 units.It offers affordable, two bedroom coach homes and three or four bedroom town homes, with government assistance for housing charges being available for some units.The units vary in size from two bedroom, 915 square foot units, to 1407 square foot, four bedroom units. Each unit comes fully equipped with a washer, dryer, refrigerator and stove.The on-site Recreation Centre, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Ralph James, has a multi-purpose room, kitchen, washrooms, the Co-op office, storage area and the mail room. There is an outdoor play area for the children and 22 garden plots available to the residents.Operated by paid management and member volunteers, it is controlled by the membership through an elected Board of Directors.The idea for the Co-op came from the local Black community which conducted a survey in the 1980s and found that affordable housing was sorely needed.
