The goal with this type of pruning is to balance the overall shape of the trees' crown. This is more commonly done with ornamental trees (ex. Japanese Maple, Chanticleer pear, Pagoda Dogwood) in the landscape. However, this can also be done on larger shade trees to improve the trees aesthetic.
Elevation
"Lifting the Crown" is done to improve light pene tration to the lawn or garden beneath the tree. It is also done to increase the distance between the crown of the tree and a walkway, driveway or roof.
