Our centre was founded in 1992 by the Chinese Benevolent Association, the Chinese Cultural Centre the Vancouver Chinatown Merchants Association and the Chinese Freemasons. We started with a small office on Main Street, in the heart of Chinatown. Since then we have moved twice and are now located at 118 Keefer Street at the street level of the Chinatown Parking Plaza.
Our community involvement includes the creation of an affiliated non-profit society to provide low cost housing and frequent fund raising campaigns to assist the victims of natural disasters in Canada and China. More recently, the CBA has become the organizer for many social and multi-cultural projects including popular annual events such as the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) Parade and the Canada Day Celebration.
VANDUs approach to reforming public policy is based on a social movement model which sees the actions of the group oppressed by the existing regime, broader social attitudes towards the issues in question and government policy and practices as fundamentally interconnected elements of an evolving, and thus changeable, social contract. Social movements like the Abolition of Slavery, the Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Liberation Movement were successful when self-organized activity of the oppressed group (including both the radical and reformist activities) took on oppressive policies and practices at the level of broad political struggle, and were thus able to shift social attitudes and public policy simultaneously and dialectically.

Welcome to Jacob's Well. We are a faith-based community located in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. We seek mutually transformative friendship with people on the margins of society and equip others to do the same in their own context. The foundations to our community are built on friendship, sharing, and equipping.
The Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver (CBA) was founded in 1895 by six pioneers who saw a need to establish an organization that would provide mutual support and leadership within the Chinese Canadian community. In 1906, CBA was formally registered as a non-profit organization in the province of British Columbia. Since its inception, the CBA has worked diligently to promote equality for Chinese Canadians and to foster better understanding with other community groups.
