In the early 70s, Gene Hughes, a Utah school teacher, began experiencing a nagging stomach condition. He took the advice of a neighbor who suggested cayenne pepper for his discomfort. It worked! Soon Gene began feeling much better, but swallowing a spoonful of cayenne pepper was awful. That's when his wife, Kristine, suggested putting the powder into easy-to-swallow gelatin capsules. It was revolutionary! Gene and Kristine soon enlisted the support of family - Dick and Pauline Hughes and Jay and Arva Hughes - to begin a small family business, selling encapsulated cayenne and other herbs and supplements to health food stores. The family soon realized they wanted to touch more lives with their products, and they found the perfect vehicle for making this happen - direct marketing. This business model allowed them to educate consumers about the vitamin supplement products and provided their sales force an opportunity to share in the success of the company. The S.M.A.R.T Clinic Inc. has been working with industrial workers , professional athletes and the every day person for nearly 10 years. As members of the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association we work on the principal of 'treat the cause and not the symptom'. As specialized therapists, we see the body as a whole, working together to function and heal. Applying this principal and philosophy, we have seen proven results in achieving faster return to work, sport and everyday activities.In 2003 The S.M.A.R.T. Clinic was established for private care in Mississauga, ON. Our focus was to provide Athletic Therapy services to the everyday athlete. In 2004 we branched out to work with the Industrial Athlete. We transferred our specialized techniques of sport specific rehabilitation to work specific rehabilitation. Each worker does a specific job and should be trained and rehabilitated to function for that specific job at the highest level. We have since had several successful onsite SMART clinics with companies such as Purolator, Honda and Campbell's.
