The community is believed to derive from the phrase, on a knoll. The hamlet of Onanole is situated 105 km north of Brandon. It is located at the south entrance to Riding Mountain National Park. According to 1991 statistics the population of Onanole is 404, but during the summer it triples because of summer residents.
