Emerald Ash Borer in GeorginaThe Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a highly invasive insect that attacks, feeds on, and kills all species of healthy ash trees. EAB was first sighted in York Region in 2008, and is now found throughout the Region and much of southern Ontario. Over the next three to five years the Towns Parks & Facilities Division will be removing infested trees. Additional trees of a different species will be planted throughout Georgina, under the Georgina Tree Planting Program, during usual planting seasons in the fall and spring. In 1973, the Province of Ontario passed the Regional Municipality of Durham Act to establish Durham as one of five Regional governments in the Greater Toronto Area. The Act annexed and amalgamated 21 former municipalities of the counties of Ontario, Northumberland and Durham to form eight area municipalities: Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby. Members of the first Regional Council were elected late in 1973 and the Regional Municipality of Durham began operating on January 1, 1974.
