How about a history lesson on our stores and owners? Don't worry, there won't be a test afterwards, or at least it won't be a tough one. Paul Lynn Paul Williams and Lynn Kanuka opened their first store in White Rock back in 1996 after they had retired from competitive running and representing Canada on the international stage. Both had very successful careers. Lynn won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1986, a bronze medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, finished first in the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York in 1985, won a bronze medal at the Cross Country Championships in 1989 and won the Vancouver Sun Run three times. Paul won a gold medal at the Seattle Goodwill Games, a bronze medal at the New Zealand Commonwealth Games, both in 1990, and he won The Vancouver Sun run in 1988 and 1992. He attended three Olympic Games, representing Canada in 5000 and 10,000 metre track events. Easy to see why after their racing careers they decided to open a store focused on running. Peninsula Runners wants to be the number one source for footwear and athletic equipment as well as give customers terrific service. At Peninsula runners we have dedicated staff that will pass along to you the extensive knowledge they have learned about running and fitness over the years. But as Paul recently said was the number one reason for opening Peninsula Runners, aside from looking for the perfect recipe for pecan pie, they wanted to help make that community the fittest community in Canada. In 2001 Peninsula Runners opened a second store in the Walnut Grove area of Langley. Paul teamed up with Philip Ellis, a former 28 minute 10 km runner and also the 1991 Sun Run champion, to open this store with the same goal in mind. We positioned the store in an easy location to get to and more importantly a great area for running clinics to be run from. In the spring of 2004 the Victoria location of Peninsula Runners opened with Dave Milne, one of Canada's best steeplechase runners, teaming up with us to provide Victoria with our top class service and expertise. Situated close to University of Victoria at Shelbourne Plaza it is great place to run from and easy to get to. Most recently, the Abbotsford location of Peninsula Runners opened in February 2010 with Paul and Phil carrying on the PenRun tradition of quality service and best prices.
Whatever the founders may have dreamed might happen, that night they showed courage, dedication and belief in themselves, their community and their Jewish life to commit to forming a new congregation. And as Beth Israel has grown and changed over the many years it still relies upon its members and leaders to have the courage of their convictions to take the steps to ensure that Beth Israel continues to grow and adapt to changing circumstances and environments so that it will continue to be an important and relevant institution in the life of the Jewish community.

Thank goodness some people with foresight and vision saw the opportunity that presented itself when the Shaughnessy Golf course closed in the 60s. Saving a good chunk of the land from developers, the Vancouver Foundation, the Province and the City of Vancouver worked to establish this gem on part of the land once occupied by the golf course. The results are now here for all to see with charming little paths winding among the impressive variety of plants, shrubs, bushes and trees that are all carefully labeled throughout the grounds. There's even a fun and challenging hedge maze! The restaurant is a lovely place to go for a meal and the gardens seem an ideal spot to hold a wedding with great places for photo ops throughout the gardens. And Van Dusen continues to improve with a new visitor centre being built for 2011. The other thing that must be mentioned as a must see is the light show they put on every Christmas. Huge swaths of the gardens are lit up with thousands if not millions of lights. This is all complemented by a musically choreographed light show that happens regularly on the main pond. WIth snack booths offering hot chocolate and other goodies it is a great way to indulge in Christmas Spirit. Visit Van Dusen Gardens and enjoy a little tranquility in the middle of the city!Read more
