The first thing i notice when i walked into POGUE MAHONES was that all the waitresses wore plaid thigh-length skirts - i am glad i arrived here! It is a kind of dark place with dark wood all over. Also it is a very busy and noisy place, i can barely hear myself talking. The waiters/waitresses were very attentive as they came back every once in awhile to check on our needs a few times. All of our food arrive fresh and hot. My coffee was fresh and scalding hot, it came in a generous sized mug too. My seafood chowder was hot and it was very creamy, not bad! My chicken wings were satisfactory, no complaints here! Okay now my Grand Spuds with irish-poutine-style sucked!!! The fries had melted cheese and gravy on top, but the freshcut homemade fries, tasted totally off. My friend who had fries in his dish also complained about the fries tasting YUCK! My other friends were very satisfied with their dishes (fish n chips, liver n onions w mashed potato, chicken pot pie w mashed potatoes, jambalaya). Good service, satisfactory food, unpleasant atmosphere (too noisy)... would i visit again? i dont think i will. Overall satisfactory!

The Fran's tradition began more than 70 years ago by Buffalo, NY-native Francis (Fran) Deck. In 1918, Francis' older brother Greg opened Deco Refreshments, a modest dining establishment and the perfect place for Francis to debut Fran's. Soon, Buffalo had more than 50 Deco locations. Francis, along with his wife Ellen Jane sought to expand. They headed to Toronto where they opened their first Fran's location as a modest, ten-stool diner at Yonge and St. Clair. In its history, Fran's has become famous for several dishes, most notably the 'Banquet Burger'. Francis Deck created the world's first Banquet Burger in the 1940s - today, you might recognize the Banquet Burger by its modern name, the bacon cheeseburger! Other favourites include Fran's famous chili and rice pudding - both have earned several awards over the years - and, of course, homemade apple pie.
