On March 21, 1978 the Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Society of Vancouver Island was incorporated. In the ensuing years many things have happened that have helped to bring the Ukrainian community of Victoria and Vancouver Island closer together. The present Ukrainian Cultural Centre was purchased in early 1979 and with the help of many volunteers was renovated and opened later that year. We strive to promote the development of Ukrainian Canadian culture by way of annual events such as our Ukrainian Easter Traditions open house usually held on Palm Sunday. This event includes the sale of traditional Ukrainian Easter baking, demonstrations and classes in the traditional art of Pysanky or Easter Egg writing as well as displays of embroidery, costumes, art and artifacts. Another annual event is Malanka , which is the celebration of the New Year with a gala banquet and dance with performances by the Veselka Ukrainian Dancers. This event is held on a Saturday in the middle of January. Some of the objectives of the society are to promote and propagate the development of Ukrainian-Canadian Culture; also to facilitate a better understanding of Ukrainian-Canadian among other ethnocultural groups

Cowichan Women Against Violence Society works from a feminist perspective to provide a supportive environment for victims and children who have been affected by abuse. We support diversity, change, choice and growth through counselling, advocacy, emergency shelter, community development and education The purposes of the Society are: 1. To provide emotional support and information for victims who have been sexually assaulted or physically/emotionally battered. 2. To provide temporary emergency shelter for women, who have been physically/emotionally battered or sexually assaulted, and their children. 3. To ac as a liaison between the sexually assaulted and/or battered victim, community services and the legal and medical system. 4. To be an educational force for progressive changes in attitudes, laws, institutional procedures dealing with violence against victims and children. 5. To work for the prevention of sexual assault, battering, and child sexual abuse/incest.
