Welcome to the Rankin Culture & Recreation CentreThe 'Centré has been around for many years under various forms. In fact, the original was built in 1963. Unfortunately, the 'Rink' as it's known to most now, burned in a fire on March 15, 2005. This was a great loss for our entire community and surrounding area. When asked it they wanted to rebuild or simply cease operations, the community gathered and gave a unanimous thumb's up to rebuild. And that's whatwe've done! Kokomish Cafe began as a First Nations initiative in 1998. It started as a little diner that also had a gas bar attached.Kokomish began its transitional phase in 2003 when it was purchased by Karen Whalen. With new ownership came renovations which doubled the size of the building and it became a full-scale restaurant.After several years the restaurant returned to its former diner size and the large dining area has since become our gift store.Our gift store offers many native & canadian inspired gifts and is truly a must-see!

Nicholas Ailleboust, Sieur de Coulonge, spent the winter 1694-95 near the mouth of the Coulonge River, establishing one of the first settlements in the Ottawa River. The first trading post called Fort-Coulonge. In 1760, the Company Northwest assumed in management and in 1821, the fort became the property of the Hudson's Bay Company. Until 1828, he served as principal of the Ottawa office. The farm of 655 acres station was sold in 1844 and the buildings in 1855, The post was transformed, becoming the town of Fort-Coulonge, located a few miles down the river. The first sawmill in the area was built in 1843 by George Bryson. The first wooden chapel was erected in 1873, but it was replaced by a brick church in 1884 after a fire. In 1886, the railroad rallied Fort-Coulonge. On December 10, 1888, Fort-Coulonge became a municipality and John Bryson assumed the office of mayor.
