Sneaky Dee's is a Toronto institution, best known for the bands that played there during Toronto's last music heyday in the late 1970s. Today it continues to be a popular place for both veteran and up-and-coming acts who play in the up-stairs room. The menu has a strong Mexican flavour, plus the usual pub fare and a good selection of beers on tap.
Milagro Restaurante Mexicano Y Cantina is inspired by Mexico City's great restaurants of the golden era and offers traditional dishes from Mexico such as botanas, ceviches, tacos and tortas. Mercer Street, located in the Entertainment District, is the first and flagship cantina, started by Mexico City-born brothers Arturo and Andrés Anhalt.
This crowded taco joint is a mecca for penny-pinching students wishing to trade in another KD dinner for baja fish, chicken with mole rijo and ceviche tostados (which, famously, routinely sell out by 3pm). The menu, posted daily on the restaurant's Twitter feed, is heavy on the inventive Mexican and light on the pocketbook (individual dishes hover in the $4-$7 range).
This bad ass downtown Mexican resto and tequila bar has all the fixings for a great night out. Scene stealers gather in the pink-accented charismatic space to chow down on flank steak tacos and sip Manny's Margaritas by candlelight. Special mention is consistently showered on the homemade salsa tower. The cozy environs make an elegant shift from dinner restaurant to moody lounge. A complimentary coat check is a nice touch and a warm-weather patio with an outdoor kitchen extends the magic.
