The community is believed to derive from the phrase, on a knoll. The hamlet of Onanole is situated 105 km north of Brandon. It is located at the south entrance to Riding Mountain National Park. According to 1991 statistics the population of Onanole is 404, but during the summer it triples because of summer residents. Onanole is part of the Rural Municipality of Park South which has a population of 935 in 1991. The entrance to Onanole is marked with a huge statue of an elk, the chosen symbol of the community. Onanole has an active Recreation Centre including a hockey arena, curling rink and community hall. The seniors of the hamlet have a gathering centre next to the Community Centre.
