A true Italian Trattoria located on Lansdowne Ave. just below St. Claire Ave. in Toronto. The idea behind the Big Ragu was to provide the neighbourhood with a relaxed venue for eating simple Italian food, cooked extremely well, accompanied by excellent wine, at a great price. At The Big Ragu, we are not particularly into trends and gimmicks. Home-made pasta, slow cooked braises, warm and cold salads, and classical desserts are our specialities.

It is a friendly restaurant. The waitresses are nice. The fish (sashimi) was very fresh, but the salmon and tuna were cut in a big chunk (too thick to eat). The the noodles of Nabeyaki Udon were too hard (normally japanese udon should be chewy). The soup of the udon is just a soy sauce soup based with some fish cakes, a shrimp tempura and a fish tempura. The tempura served with the noodles became soggy. The Uni sushi was fresh and the price is good ($6.50 per order). The vegetable tempura dinner is so so. The vegetable tempura were in big chunk, not crispy enough. The sauce of the tempura is okay. I saw other people in the next table who had bento box dinner. Those bento box dinners looked good to me. Diners take flight on a culinary adventure as soon as they arrive at this unassuming strip mall in North Toronto, where varied tasty tapas dishes rule the roost. Menu picks, like goat cheese croquettes and the swooned-over eggplant with queso fresco, are always interesting. Service staff at this Spanish-style resto, where the vibe is equal parts electric and cozy, is well informed and professional. The chef's tasting menu relieves overwhelmed diners from having to pick from an abundance of temptations. The foie gras and ceviche with chips are standouts. The wine list is a blessing that spills over with choice for tapas pairings. If reservations are unavailable online, feel free to give us a call directly to accomodate your request.
After reading some excellent reviews, I decided to bring my husband here for his birthday dinner. Most of what we had were new to us but very tasty. I've always wanted to try jamon iberico and we were able to get our first taste of the famed iberico and it was indeed fantastic! Although the dishes were small, we were pretty full by the end of our meal and the overall experience was very good. Read more
