The Wollaston & Limerick Union Public Library opened to the public on January 11, 1973. There are approximately 450 patrons.Since its beginnings, this 'wee library with heart'' has been a valuable resource supporting literacy, employment, local business, health and daily life in the community. Like other libraries, our role is changing with the times. We are growing into an information hub for our community by offering a gateway to the digital world. At the same time we promote information sharing and social interaction right here at home. 'There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office nor wealth receives the slightest consideration'.
A private Circulating/Lending Library existed in Parry Sound before the Parry Sound Public Library was formed. On October 2, 1885 , the Circulating Library, originally run by Mr. J.A. Prentice, was transferred to Miss Fawns' dressmaking establishment on James Street . Subscription to the library was $1.00 per year. Members could change their books between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on Saturdays until 8 p.m. An appeal in the North Star requested that all parties having books out return them as soon as possible.
