Prostate cancer is a serious condition that can affect almost any man usually over the age of 45, but most commonly over the age of 60. It is the most common cancer men experience other than skin cancer, and it is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in North American Men. The prostate is composed of several different types of cells, but the cells that usually become cancerous are the gland cells. A cancer in gland cells is called an adenocarcinoma. Once these cells become cancerous, the disease can spread to the other cells and throughout the body. The cancer can grow at different rates, and doctors still do not know which cancers will grow quickly and which will grow slowly. The cancer becomes life threatening when it spreads beyond the prostate either locally or distantly to other areas of the body (Metastases).

Street Health is a non-profit community based agency that improves the health of homeless and under-housed people. We offer both physical and mental health programs. Our work is focused in the neighbourhood around Dundas and Sherbourne Streets, an area with the largest concentration of homeless shelters and drop-in centres. The people we work with have lives characterized by extreme poverty, chronic unemployment, insecurity in housing, poor nutrition, high stress and loneliness.

Here we strive to better understand the cancer and survivorship experience in order to improve it. We look for fresh new ideas and approaches to improve health and wellness during and after cancer treatment. We endeavour to close the gap between what we already know works and what survivors do day to day to improve their own health and wellness. We believe we can accomplish these goals by bringing together diverse groups of researchers, clinicians, educators, community organizations and cancer survivors to develop new communities of research and practice based here at ELLICSR.
