Family Montessori School Society is the longest operating non-profit Montessori preschool in Vancouver. Our first school, located in False Creek near Granville Island on Sitka Square, opened in 1980. Our second school was originally situated at the Dunbar Heights Baptist Church, but was relocated to the Jericho Hill Centre on West 4th Avenue in 1995. The two schools operate as one non-profit society and are governed by a parent-run volunteer Board of Directors. Our schools offer both morning and afternoon classes and run five days a week. Up to 20 children are enrolled in each class. In keeping with the Montessori philosophy, we aim to balance the classes so that each session has a mixed age group and a balance of genders. Both sites offer an integrated preschool and kindergarten program for children between the ages of two years eight months and six years old.
The Preschool’s philosophy is based on the desire to combine learning with play in a caring, supportive environment using a blended approach of Montessori and traditional methods.Children Its goal is to provide for each child an active and continually unfolding process of self-discovery that occurs in the present and helps prepare the child for the future. Its focus is to develop each child’s emotional, social, physical, linguistic, cognitive, intellectual, individual, and perceptual skills. The philosophy, goals, and focus are reflected daily in the Preschool’s learning environment which respects and recognizes the unique personality of each child. In responding to the spirit of the child, his/her development can be nurtured and enhanced through an educational process that provides freedom, choice, and discipline.
Our Preschool Teachers:, Pegeen Hammer - Pegeen was introduced to the Montessori method of education when her youngest child attended a Montessori preschool. She was fascinated by the Montessori theories and methods and chose to embark on her own path to become a Montessori Early Childhood Educator. Pegeen received her diploma in Montessori Education at Western Montessori Teacher's College and went on to complete her certificate in Early Childhood Education. I strive to bring to my preschool class a rewarding, hands on learning environment where each child is treated as the wondrous individual that they are. As a Montessori teacher, it is my job to follow the children's special sensitive periods and present learning materials to aid in the accomplishment of independence, competence and confidence. Vancouver Bilingual is unique among area preschools in combining an excellent preschool education with bilingual instruction in both English and French. It is the perfect start to French immersion!
My eldest son went to this preschool for 2 years, and we loved it so much, we were thrilled to enroll his younger sister as well. Even with a change in teachers (one retired), we have found consistent warmth and care given. My son has gone on to excel in French immersion, and my daughter sings songs to herself as well as with her brother every day. The teachers are gentle, caring, and clearly love their work. I cannot speak highly enough of them or of our experience with this school.Read more
