GRASSROOTS NEWSWe publish 20,000 copies of our paper each issue with distribution throughout the Province of Manitoba including major urban centres such as Winnipeg, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Thompson and The Pas.Readership values are estimated at approx 80,000 per issue with key demographic representing First Nation and Metis organizations, business offices and grassroots readership (individuals) in urban and rural areas of the province. All Manitoba First Nation communities along Metis regional offices receive copies of our paper. We are well read and respected among Manitoba's Aboriginal population and have regular columns written by Grand Chief Ron Evans (AMC - Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs), David Chartrand (MMF President - Manitoba Metis Federation), Grand Chief Morris Shannacappo (SCO -Southern Chiefs Organization) among other Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal political figures.

AboutUsPursuant to an agreement (the ?Subsidiary Agreement?) entered into on April 1, 1983 between Canad,a Manitoba and Awasis Agency of Northern Manitob,a the Agency was mandated the legal responsibility to provide child and family services to treaty and non-treaty members residing on 25 First Nations, however, with the decentralization of the Awasis Agency, the Agency provides child and family services to 12 First Nations communities.In 2000, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Province of Manitoba and Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak. The signing of the MOU meant that the Awasis Agency could expand its authority and provide services to off reserve members. These services commenced in 2005.

Bert Scharfstein acquired Canadian Footwear Ltd. in 1932. The Winnipeg-based company has since gone through many changes - as a wholesaler from the 30s through the 50s, as a footwear discounter from the late 50s, and competing with the big box retailers through the 70s until the late 80s when Bert and his wife died nine days apart.That was when the most dramatic changes began. Bert's son Brian and his partner Pam Cipryk bought the business from the estate, but they faced a big challenge. Buying the company was the easy part. Finding the right direction for future success was more daunting.After months of analyzing Canadian Footwear, Brian experienced minor health problems. He saw a specialist who put arch supports - orthotics - in his shoes to ease some pain in his knees. That was when the light bulb went off in his head - offer additional services to better fill customers' needs.

Annual ReportOur StoryThe Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Inc. was established in 1984 to reclaim Aboriginal peoplés inherent role and responsibility as the caregivers for Aboriginal children and families in Winnipeg.We are a community mandated, Aboriginal directed and supported human service organization, delivering children in care and community based programs and services to Aboriginal families.Today, with over fifty (50) programs, eleven (11) sites, and 200+ staff and volunteers, Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre provides a valued local presence in key neighbourhoods where our community lives.All Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre programs and services are developed and operate within a philosophy that is embodied in the name of the center. The name Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata translates from Ojibway into the phrase 'we all work together to help one another'. These words reflect the vision in the concept of collective responsibility and reciprocity towards helping each other.Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre has invested in a neighbourhood based practice model aimed at identifying innovative policy and practice initiatives to create and sustain family supported neighbourhoods

Broadband Communications North Inc. (BCN) was incorporated in 2002 as a not-for-profit community driven network which initially targeted 28 un-served and underserved communities with broadband issues in Manitoba. Since then BCN has been actively consolidating and expanding its network to serve more communities in order to facilitate equitable high speed broadband. BCN now services 49 rural, northern and remote communities in Manitoba.Our Board of Directors is appointed by the BCN membership and includes representatives from tribal councils, political territorial organizations and independent First Nation communities.Our network is one of the largest First Nations community networks in Canad,a spanning over 1000km, encompassing a large portion of the province of Manitoba.Our services facilitate access too many critical services; including health care (telehealth), education, justice, and governance.Our business model has been developed which promotes the growth of local First Nations businesses, who employ and train First Nations people
